Skeleton Of A Man Of 100 Years Of Age Buried In A Coffin Washed Up On The Shores Of Chesapeake Bay

A Maryland man recently made a remarkable discovery in the Chesapeake Bay: a nearly complete human skeleton that seems to be at least one hundred years old.

USATodayWorld News Washington said that George Oliver, a resident of Calvert County, Maryland, went for a walk along the shores of the bay on November 4, as he does every time, in search of fossils.

It was then that he saw a coffin when the water level was low. And inside the coffin there was a nearly whole human skeleton.

Oliver informed the station that he could see the coffin, but it is surrounded by water. He dialled the sheriff’s department and they in turn dialled an archaeological society.

USATodayWorld News Washington said that officials inspected the contents of the coffin but did not take out any of it.

Oliver said he decided to take his time to exhume the skeleton and the coffin because he did not know what would happen to the remains if he left them there as reported by USATodayWorld News Washington.

The station also said that Oliver was able to reassemble the casket on his own. He said: “When I first got there, you could not tell that there was human remains,” USATodayWorld News Washington reported.

“You just thought that it was full of beach sand.” Oliver handed the remains to the Calvert County Sheriff’s office.

Kelcey Ward, a crime scene technician with the sheriff’s office, said it is not uncommon to discover human remains that are this old, however, it is highly uncommon to find an entire skeleton that is still intact.

Indeed, this is not the first time Oliver has come across human remains — USATodayWorld News Washington said that he had found a leg bone around 15 years ago, in the same area.

When he found the coffin, Oliver thought that leg bone could have been part of the new skeleton that was found.

Ward said that it is ‘probably the most we’ve had of one body’ as quoted by the station. She opined that the skeleton might still be preserved because it was discovered in the coffin.

The spokesperson for the sheriff’s office did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment and more details about the discovery.

USATodayWorld News Washington said that according to the construction of the coffin and the state of the bones, the skeleton is likely to be over 100 years old, but the origin of the bones has not been determined yet.

Ward said she could not tell the age, race or gender of the skeleton but she had an idea of how the person died.

“We did think it was quite interesting that he had a kind of a defect to his skull here,” Ward said.

‘Well, if I was working this as a more recent case and I found that, I would probably think, maybe bullet wound or blunt force trauma of some sort, but of course, the rest of the skull is missing, which makes that kind of tricky.’

According to USATodayWorld News Washington, the bones and the coffin will be buried in a church cemetery in the local area.

Oliver, however, believes that the coffin should be open, he said to the station, because “this is somebody’s workmanship”.

“It is a pity that it happened like that,” he said. But I think it is great that we found him or her, and now they can relax.
